trip #8, Mackinaw Bridge, Brimley State Park, Soo Locks

Good morning readers! Yep, you were soo right, it's the Mackinaw Bridge!
That pic was actually from the St Ignace side. Here's the one from the Mackinaw City side.

Yep! We've just returned from our 8th trip! Just 6 more to go this year. This trip took us from Lansing, 281 miles straight north over the Mackinaw Bridge, to Brimley State Park, on beautiful Lake Superior.

We left Saturday morning for the 5 1/2 hr drive. Going over the bridge I was a wee bit nervous. As you can see in the pic Craig took from his seat, all there is between us and the great blue of Lake Michigan, is a little 6 in. curb, and a very short metal railing,
which looks even smaller way up in a RV! But we made it over just fine. We were joined on this trip by our friends from Wisconsin, Tom and Dean. We had a very spacious site. They call it a rainbow pull thru. That means, instead of pulling into your site and exiting on the next road, You pull in parallel to the road. That means your sitting area is on the side of the mo-ho hidden from the road. And our site was next to the woods, so we had a nice private spacious site. Tom and
Dean were in a back-in site right next to us. Tom made us a
campfire stew for our arrival which was very yummy!
.
.
The next day took us up the coast a ways to the Iroquios Light House.
Here's a couple of pics for your viewing pleasure. Then to the Bay Mills Casino, (I swear there's a casino everywhere we go!) where we played for an hour or so.
Craig left with about a $1 profit,
and I left with about a $10 loss, so an enjoyable time.
Then back to the campground and a walk over to the beach. Dinner(pork cutlets and roast potatoes on
our grill, and corn from Tom and Deans grill) and a campfire followed.
The next morning saw Craig and I
back at the casino,
which ended up a bad idea(didn't I say in a previous trip, we always lose?)
And the 4 of us went into Sault Ste. Marie.(about 14 mile east of the park) Where we saw a ship go thru the Soo Locks. (her's some more pics!)
There's a 21 ft difference between Lake Superior and the lakes Michigan and Huron. So they built these locks to by-pass the St Mary's River.
And after some shopping, we went to a nice Italian restaurant Dean had been to a few years back.(took some time to find it due to a not so great memory!)
Then back to the campground for another campfire and conversation.
The weather was perfect!
We made it over the bridge and back!
Enjoyable company!
A good trip!
Today, we do laundry, some yard work, and
back to work Thursday, at 7:30am for a 12 hour work day, ugh!.(gotta make up for the time off!)
But it's worth it to be able to take our trips!

And if you really want to see even more pics of the trip, look here!

  2. I just read in Budget Travel today about going up there, across the bridge, and spending a little time in Northern Michigan....maybe at the Grand Hotel??

  3. You both look so handsome in front of the light house!
I've never been across "the bridge" to the UP, but I love love love Mackinaw City.

And Lewis: my advice would be to stay on the mainland in Mackinaw City if you want a budget vacation, then take the ferry over to the island. If you want to splurge, stay at another hotel on the island and have dinner (formal attire required for men) at the Grand Hotel.
Just my bit of un-solicited advice.

gee, and I thought that was the Golden Gate Bridge...lol ;)

Lewis: I'm with mo...budget travel and the Grand Hotel definitely do not belong in the same sentence!

Just passed through Mackinaw City and toured The Grand Hotel. They charge $15 just to walk in the hotel. They will take that off the bill if you have lunch (which we did).

Mo, The Grand Hotel requires coat and tie in the evenings and no slacks for women. Formal would be a tux.

  6. Woohoo! David's thought process was like mine! hehe

The pictures are great. And wow on the ship passing through the Soo Locks. Like driving a car between the cones only on a MUCH larger scale. Impressive.

Thanks for sharing! Looks like it was a really nice mini trip!

  7. Looks like a fun trip. I made the mistake of letting Scott see this post and now all I hear is I want a camper! One of these days, maybe.

    Guys,
It wasn't a memory issue. I truly thought you wanted a tour of the backstreets of Sault St. Marie. Thanks for the great time, and I will never forget the immortal words of Craig -- "Take a coupon to Wal-mart."

  9. My sister works at the locks in Seattle. It is fascinating to watch. Does your locks have an access route for fish? They have one there for salmon to swim back upstream.
